KATNISS EVERDEEN

THE GIRL ON FIRE

Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of the series, is a tough young woman who has a strong urge to always protect those weaker than herself. Katniss volunteered to take her sister, Primrose Everdeen's place in the 74th Hunger Games after Prim's name was called during the reaping.

Originally, she had no intention of going into the games, hoping she wouldn't be picked before the female tribute was chosen. It had not even crossed her mind, but, when her sister was picked, she volunteered to save her, in hopes that she could actually win. In the first Hunger Games, instead of killing Peeta and be the winner of the games, she defied the rules and the two of them threaten to commit double suicide so there will be no winner.

"When her sister was picked, she volunteered to save her..."

Over the course of The Hunger Games novel, such as in Catching Fire, she comes to learn that she’s become a symbol of rebellion against the Capitol because she defied the Capitol’s rules and threatened suicide with Peeta at the end of the Hunger Games. But Katniss’s primary intent wasn’t to stage an act of rebellion, though she does recognize that there was some spirit of defiance in the gesture.

Throughout the Third Quarter Quell of The 75th Hunger Games (seen in Catching Fire), we know that Katniss’s true intention was to save Peeta and not have him killed. She fought the many ways to keep him safe and so did he out of love. She is driven by the will to survive and through her hunting learns to provide for her family on her own. But what made her a true hero, was when she had enough of being the puppet of the Capitol.

"She is driven by the will to survive and through her hunting, she learns to provide for her family on her own."

She was daring enough to go against the Capitol by blowing up the forcefield in the Hunger Games. Katniss wrapped a long wire around her bow and shoots it straight into the flaw found in the forcefield at the exact moment when the lightning strikes the tree, blowing up the arena. That significant act of rebellion is what led us to understand that she will be the figure everyone will look up to. The hero that serves as hope for the citizens of the 13 districts of Panem, as the others were brutally killed by the military under President Snow. The hero, the Mockingjay, that will take down the unrightful system and sadistic ‘hunger games’.

"The hero, the Mockingjay..."
